O funk é um gênero musical que se originou em comunidades afro-americanas em meados da década de 1960, quando músicos afro-americanos criaram uma nova forma de música rítmica e dançante através da mistura de soul, jazz e rhythm and blues. O funk tira a ênfase da melodia e da harmonia e traz um groove rítmico forte de baixo elétrico e bateria no fundo. Como grande parte da música de inspiração africana, o funk normalmente consiste em um groove complexo com instrumentos rítmicos tocando grooves interligados. Funk usa os mesmos acordes estendidos ricamente coloridos encontrados no bebop, um subgênero do jazz.
